2. The Sussex Arms

If you’re looking for a traditional pub in Tunbridge Wells, The Sussex Arms near the Pantiles, with its comfy sofas, real fires, and a warm ambience, may be your perfect (pub) match. It’s also home to the Forum Basement, one of the best places for live music in Tunbridge Wells!

This hidden gem of a pub packs an electric atmosphere that’ll leave you buzzing for days. 3. The Ragged Trousers

Opened in 2006 by five friends, The Ragged Trousers led the charge in the Pantiles renaissance: transforming the historic heart of Tunbridge Wells into the vibrant food and drink hub it is today. 

The Ragged – as it is affectionately known – is a unique venue that transforms from a charming brasserie by day, to a lively craft beer bar by night. Their menu combines the best of the French Bistro and traditional British pub classics for a delightful experience. During fair weather, make use of the outside seating on the Pantiles and unwind as you watch the world go by.

For a delicious lunch on the Pantiles, The Ragged Trousers is open Thuesday to Monday – though booking is recommended! The Ragged Trousers bar stocks a range of craft beers, lagers, ale, wines, and spirits.

4. The Royal Oak

As a community-focused, family-owned and run pub, The Royal Oak put an emphasis on locally sourced food and drink, as well as live music. 5. Fuggles Beer Café

6. Saint John’s Yard

7. Sankey’s Seafood Restaurant and Pub

8. The Guinea

The Guinea is a traditional pub in Tunbridge Wells. They offer a tasty bottomless brunch, mouth-watering Sunday roasts, and a range of delicious gastropub staples. The Guinea features a relaxing outdoor space and a welcoming atmosphere.

11. The George and Dragon – Speldhurst

According to local legend, the Great Hall hosted a banquet for Kentish archers on their return from the battle of Agincourt in 1415.

13. The Halfway House – Brenchley

The Halfway House in Brenchley is a traditional, family-run country pub with a focus on fine quality real ales, served straight from the barrel. They also offer between 7 and 10 different beers daily. The rustic cosy interior of The Halfway House offers warmth, with plenty of snug nooks and tables to choose from, while the garden is delightful during spring and summer.

15. Crown Inn – Groombridge

This 16th-century free house is one of the oldest pubs in the South of England. The Crown Inn, Groombridge, is a family-run pub with a B&B. The Interior of the pub exudes country warmth and charm, with an open fireplace, low beams, and a cosy decor. The Crown offer a hearty menu featuring sharing platters as well as pub classics.

16. The Mount Edgcumbe

The Mount Edgcumbe is a country pub located within Tunbridge Wells Common. This family-run pub offers delicious food in a delightful setting – complete with a garden and outdoor seating. For something different, check out the natural sandstone cave inside the pub.

The Oldest Pubs in Tunbridge Wells

Tunbridge Wells has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. In 1606, a natural spring with supposed medicinal properties was discovered in Tunbridge Wells, and it soon drew visitors – high society and aristocrats – from all over England.

As the town gained popularity, its need for watering holes and coaching inns grew, and that’s where the oldest pubs in Tunbridge Wells come in.

• Both The Compasses and The Grove Tavern have been around since the mid-1700s.
  
• As early as 1739, The George served as a coaching inn for travellers heading to and from London. 
  
• Tucked away from the Pantiles, The Sussex Arms was built in the early 17th century to serve the coachmen and servants of the gentry visiting Tunbridge Wells.
  
• The Ragged Trousers occupies a part of the town’s Old Assembly rooms – the same drinking and gambling den used by Beau Nash as his headquarters.

The Forum Basement in The Sussex Arms, The George, and The Royal Oak all host live music events throughout the year. Although Local & Live (Tunbridge Wells’ largest annual event) takes place in Calverley Grounds over the bank holiday weekend, the festivities continue at the Forum, and on Sussex Mews (just outside The Sussex Arms) on the Monday.

Pub quiz nights are regularly held at The Sussex Arms, Fuggles Beer Cafe, and The Guinea. The Sussex Arms is also known to host comedy nights, karaoke, and Mario Kart Tournaments.
